I have been researching Manx law since 1988, and have extensive experience of doctrinal, archival, and socio-legal research in the Crown Dependencies. This has resulted in academic publications on the content of Manx and Imperial law, the constitutional history of the Isle of Man, and the experiences of legal professionals, and politicians, in the Isle of Man.
My expertise as a researcher has also led to my working with clients to provide consultancy or contract research. Consultancy typically involves me applying existing knowledge and expertise to the particular situation of a client, resulting in a confidential report for the client. Contract research typically involves me in undertaking new primary research within my broad specialisms, leading to a publication addressing research questions important to the client. Clients have included the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Jisc, and the Independent Isle of Man Covid Review (the Brunner Review). I have also carried out confidential contract research, and pro bono consultancy for a range of charities.
I am not legally qualified in any jurisdiction, including the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey; and do not offer legal representation or legal services for any jurisdiction. If you are an individual with a legal problem involving a Crown Dependency you are better off contacting a qualified legal professional in the relevant jurisdiction.
Typically, I carry out contract research as part of my employment at Oxford Brookes University, with your contract being with Oxford Brookes University. For some very short consultancy contracts, I will deliver the work separate from my employment at Oxford Brookes, with your contract being with me.
If you are interested in discussing a possible contract research or consultancy project, please contact me at pwedge@brookes.ac.uk
